Subang Jaya, 2 August 2018 –PROTON kicked off the second half of 2018 by posting its strongest sales numbers for the last 30 months. Sales grew by 31% over the previous month as 8,102 Proton cars were sold to local car buyers and export customers. While Malaysian sales were driven by customers looking to take advantage of the zero rating for GST and before the implementation of SST in September, the resumption of export activities by the Company was what delivered a boost to the overall numbers.
Approximately 11.7% market share as Saga and Persona continue to be the most popular models
PROTON experienced a third consecutive month of market share growth with an estimated 11.7% of Total Industry Volume (TIV) for the month. This compares to the 9.6% market share it garnered in June according to numbers published by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).
The Saga and Persona continue to lead sales, with the former breaking through the 3,000 unit barrier for the first time in 2018. The Persona also achieved a new high point for the year as more than 2,221 sales were recorded, marking the first instance it breached the 2,000 unit barrier since May 2017.
The continued popularity of the Saga is attributed to its class leading affordability, spaciousness and handling as well as the ‘Best Saga deal in 10-years’ promotion where a brand new Saga could be bought for less than RM30,000 in June and July this year. As for the Persona, its internationally recognized ASEAN NCAP 5 star rating, extensive safety feature list that includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control (TC) and 6 airbags as well as its spacious interior, 510L boot and long equipment list were key factors to attracting buyers.
“July was a very good month for PROTON as we had achieved our highest volume not just for 2018 but also for the last 30 months. We know that a big factor in boosting sales is the current tax holiday period with zero-rated GST prior to the implementation of SST in September but the numbers also prove that Malaysians are opening their eyes to the attractive buying proposition offered by the current range of Proton cars. We are therefore hopeful of carrying over this momentum even after SST has been introduced as we gear up for the launch of our first SUV later in the year,” said Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON Edar.
Exports resume for the first time since collaboration with Geely
One of the main pillars outlined for the long term growth of PROTON is export sales, which kicked off in 2018 with 517 cars shipped in July. With more shipments due before the end of the year, the Company is confident of achieving its export sales target for 2018, which will act as a springboard to selling even more cars internationally over the coming years. Currently, the most popular export market for Proton cars is the Middle East with countries like Jordan, Iraq and Iran being the main destination. Sales in Egypt are set to resume over the final quarter of the year as the country recovers from the currency crises that had hampered their car industry over the last few years.
Improving quality via the PROTON After Sales Service Competition The first ever PROTON After Sales Service Competition kicked off on 20th July in Johor Bahru. Aimed at finding the best after sales technicians in the Company, the first round attracted 50 contestants who were tested thoroughly in their area of technical expertise. Winners qualified for the final, to be held in September in the Central region, and would vie for prizes amounting to RM50,000 and incentive trips to visit Geely in China.
“As part of our commitment to enhance our quality in after sales services and products, the PROTON After Sales Service Competition provides an opportunity for our staff to compete against their peers and motivate them to excel as it shows them where they stand in their field. By challenging each other they can learn new skills that will ultimately improve the quality of work they deliver to their customers,” said Abdul Rashid.
“The improvement in service quality is crucial for PROTON as we lay the groundwork for the introduction of the SUV and other products developed together with Geely in the future. We are also in the midst of making a big investment with our partners to upgrade our outlets to 3S and 4S status so the addition of more highly skilled technicians to serve our customers better is a timely development,” he added.
Showcasing Proton cars with Ace The Space and PROTON 1 Tank Adventure
To ensure that interest in the current range of Proton cars is maintained, even as efforts are shifted to the launch of the new SUV, the Company initiated two event based activities to showcase the merits of its products.
The first event was Ace The Space, where members of the public were invited to visit selected outlets and dealerships to participate in a challenge to see how many people could fit inside the ‘Xtra space’ of a Proton Ertiga. The best teams were rewarded attractive prizes with the five best overall invited to compete in the final to be held on 18 August at the Proton Edar Crystal outlet. Unlike the preliminary rounds, the vehicle used in the final will be the Proton Exora so the probability of the current record of 41 people in an Ertiga being broken during the event is high.
The second initiative is the PROTON 1 Tank Adventure,which brings customers, Proton car clubbers, influencers and the media together in a journey around five regions in Malaysia. Each leg encourages participants to enjoy the sights, culture and cuisine of the respective region while driving either a Proton Iriz, Persona or Saga. The only caveat is that the journey, which often covers over 600km, has to be completed using just one tank of fuel. Prizes are awarded to the best performers and there will be a grand final this month where participants will be asked to complete a journey of over 720 km.
best fuel consumption figures obtained by participants during the regional rounds thus far are 21.05km/L for the Iriz and 25.18km/L for the Persona. As for the affordable Proton Saga, its best recorded reading is an incredible 28.49km/L.
“While there is a lot of anticipation surrounding the launch of PROTON’s first SUV, the Company is also aware of the need to continually promote its entire range of cars. Both these initiatives are designed to showcase the strengths and durability of our current models and it is hoped this will lead to continued interest from car buyers,” said Abdul Rashid.Increased contribution to Tabung Harapan Malaysia As with the previous month, PROTON is continuing to support Tabung Harapan Malaysia by contributing RM10 for each car sold up to 31 December 2018. Therefore, by selling 8,102 cars in July a sum of RM81,020 will be appropriated following the RM61,730 contribution from last month.
