INNOVATING WITH
STRATEGY AND TECHNOLOGY
When we started out, our main objective was to propel Malaysia into the 21st century as an industrialised nation. From day 1, we set out to strategically develop indigenous R&D and design capabilities while aiming for world class manufacturing and production standards. Our desire to constantly improve continues to this day, undoubtedly leading to PROTON being at the forefront of the automotive industry.
Research & Development
To stay ahead of the curve, we have invested billions of ringgit and countless hours into Research & Development. We constantly acquire and develop new technology in design and engineering to bring cutting edge facilities and innovative products into market. With a fully integrated engineering service capable of creating new concepts and designs, we have become a full-fledged automotive manufacturer. Through extensive R&D, we now design and produce our own car platforms, bodies and engines. From design and development all the way to prototyping, testing and manufacturing.
Vehicle Platforms
Our vehicle programme team has gained years of expertise in design and components engineering when it worked together with the team at Lotus UK. Equipped with sophisticated software and top-notch tools, our vehicle platforms forged forward with creativity across multiple programmes including product strategic planning, styling, engineering design and supplier development programmes.
Powertrain Development
Our Powertrain division works hard not only to develop our CAMPRO and VVTi engine families, but also to future-proof them. Apart from developing Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), our Powertrain division works on Hybrid and pure electric drive systems and also PROTON’s power plant.
Homologation & Testing
Every Proton undergoes a rigorous testing process to ensure it is safe and reliable for the masses. Our Homologation & Testing division oversees this responsibility. Our Component, Material, Strength & Safety (CMSS) Laboratories are manned by over 45 specialist staff that have undergone rigorous training both locally and internationally.
Inside our Emission Development Laboratory, EURO 4 standards are currently employed, with goals of EURO 5 standards in the near future. This laboratory tests the amounts of carbon dioxide that every vehicle emits.
The Noise Laboratory conducts a string of tests that cover exterior noise, interior noise, cabin noise and vibrations.
The PROTON Test Track is a semi-high speed test track that allows us to stress test every car. Our tests cover durability, fuel efficiency, squeak and rattle, and multiple simulations. These include various road surfaces and gradients as well as flood and rain simulation.
Styling & Technology Development
Take a look inside our Styling Division and you’ll find 4 primary units: Design and Computer Aided Styling (CAS), Colour Design, Model Design and Advanced Design. The team implements state-of-the-art technology to conduct analysis, refine processes and the creation components. Its core competencies include digital design that involves sketching, rendering and surfacing, as well as rapid prototyping that further enhances the design process. The team of designers, modellers and engineers employ a back-to-basics approach with an obsession of perfection – of shapes and surfaces. The first department to be set up under PROTON's R&D initiative, PROTON design has a multi-ethnic roster of 57 talents consisting of both local and international graduates from various disciplines including industrial design, textile design, graphic design, fashion design, architecture and mechanical engineering, to name a few.
