Malaysia’s first national car, the Proton Saga was introduced in July 1985. It was a historic moment for Malaysia’s automotive industry.
A red Proton Saga, adorning the Jalur Gemilang, was the first car driven on the Penang Bridge during its opening ceremony, driven by Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, wife of then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Proton Saga made its debut in the United Kingdom and PROTON was crowned the “fastest selling make of new car ever to enter the United Kingdom”, exceeding 12-month sales target within 6 months.
