  • Popularity of black edition drives decision to introduce Quartz Black as a colour option for X50 starting in April

9 April 2026 – With its long history of being Malaysia’s most popular SUV offering, the Proton X50 continues to build a strong fan base of customers attracted to its USPs of Stylish design, Powerful performance, Outstanding safety, Revolutionary intelligence, and Total comfort or SPORT. In a market segment packed full of new and evolving rivals however, maintaining success however requires a dynamic approach to catch the attention of potential buyers and this is why there is now all-new colour option available.

In the ever-evolving world of automotive design, trends come and go and colours shift from vibrant to muted, from experimental to conservative. Yet, through every era, one shade has remained a constant symbol of sophistication, power, and understated confidence — black. After the success of the Proton X50 Black Edition in March, a limited run of 200 units based on the Flagship variant only, PROTON will introduce Quartz Black as a key colour option for the Proton X50 for all variants starting in April. By doing so, the company is tapping into a design language that is both timeless and increasingly relevant to modern consumers.

A design-forward and timeless choice

The colour black has long held a unique position in the automotive palette. Unlike brighter hues that often reflect momentary trends, black transcends fashion cycles and is often associated with elegance and authority. For many buyers today, especially younger urban professionals, black represents more than just aesthetics; it reflects a lifestyle choice rooted in minimalism, maturity, and confidence.

This renewed appreciation for black vehicles is also shaped by broader design movements. Across industries as diverse as technology and fashion, there has been a shift toward clean, monochromatic expressions. So today, there are smartphones, home interiors and even luxury goods increasingly embracing darker tones, reinforcing black as a symbol of premium quality. The same philosophy extends to cars, where a black exterior enhances perceived value while accentuating design lines and proportions.

For the Proton X50, a model already celebrated for its sporty character, the addition of Quartz Black amplifies its visual impact. The SUV’s bold front fascia, sculpted body panels and dynamic stance take on a sharper, more assertive presence when finished in black. It is also a colour that highlights contrast, accentuating details such as chrome accents and LED lighting signatures and allows the X50’s design details to stand out with greater clarity.

Beyond aesthetics, black also carries practical appeal, being widely regarded as a safe choice in the resale market and often retaining desirability across different buyer groups. This enduring popularity ensures that black vehicles remain easier to sell and maintain strong residual value, which is a key consideration for increasingly savvy Malaysian consumers.

A milestone model for PROTON and SUVs in Malaysia

Despite the aforementioned glut of new rivals in the B-segment SUV market, the Proton X50 continues to build on its strong market momentum, recording 3,265 units sold in March and reaffirming its position as Malaysia’s most popular SUV model for the first three months of 2026 with 7,571 units sold. This is also an increase of 48% over the sales volume from the first three months of 2025, proving the customer appeal of the updated model that debuted in July last year.

PROTON however understands product appeal must extend beyond the vehicle itself as the ownership experience plays an equally critical role in shaping customer satisfaction. Recognising this, the company complements the Proton X50 with a comprehensive suite of after-sales commitments designed to deliver convenience and peace of mind.

These are firstly the Fast Service* initiative that caters to customers seeking efficiency, offering quick turnaround times for basic maintenance such as engine oil and filter replacements in just 90 minutes, and is aimed towards those who book ahead and wait on-site.

For more extensive servicing needs, the 1-Day Service Delivery* promise ensures vehicles are returned within 24 hours, whether through scheduled appointments or walk-ins. Finally, for situations where repairs require a longer timeframe, PROTON goes a step further. Should the servicing to be done on a vehicle take more than three working days to complete, customers are provided with a relief car, along with a complimentary one-time service covering both parts and labour.

Commenting on the measures to boost the appeal of the Proton X50, Dato’ Ir Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar said, “The Proton X50 is the company’s spearhead for its SUV range and has been an unprecedented success since its introduction in 2020. The success is built on the quality of the product and understanding of customer needs so the introduction of Quartz Black as a colour option, and the continued emphasis on customer experience are prime examples of our ethos.

“PROTON believes that today’s buyers are not just purchasing a vehicle, they are investing in an identity, a lifestyle, and a promise of reliability. Therefore, black is more than just a colour choice for the Proton X50 as it is a statement that aligns with the model’s reputation as a modern, stylish, and dependable SUV for Malaysians.”
