Subang Jaya, 3 February 2026 –  Following a successful conclusion to 2025 that resulted in overall sales outpacing TIV growth by over six times, PROTON has carried forward the momentum and kicked off the new year with an impressive performance in January. Group sales of 19,833 units mean the company has achieved its best monthly sales in 15 years. The achievement is a 35.3% improvement over December 2025 and a 100% year-on-year increase over the 9,918 units sold in January last year.

Rising in tandem, Total Industry Volume (TIV) is estimated to have increased by 28.3% year-on-year but also dropped by an estimated 28.6% when measured against the record volume achieved in December 2025. Based on early calculations, PROTON’s market share is estimated to be 30.6%, another high point since January 2012 and pointing towards a good start for the company’s ambition to sell 200,000 units in 2026.

Proton Saga powers growth with best-ever sales month

The strong sales performance in January was powered by the 2026 Proton Saga achieving a new monthly sales record. With 10,285 units sold in January, over 19,000 units have been delivered since the official launch on 27 November 2025, equivalent to one unit being delivered every five minutes. With booking momentum remaining strong and nearly 100,000 orders placed thus far, the model is projected to be the company’s star performer for the foreseeable future.

“The sales performance of the 2026 Proton Saga proves it has widespread appeal amongst Malaysian car buyers. Few OEMs have a model in continuous production for over 40-years and even fewer set a new sales record after more than four decades, so this is an achievement PROTON and all Malaysian’s can be proud of. With its Brunei launch coming in February, a gradual roll-out to other international markets and strong domestic demand, there are more highlights coming for the Saga this year,” said Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.

X and S models show strong year on year sales growth to start the year

While the headlines are grabbed by its A-segment sedan offering, PROTON’s X-series SUVs and S-series sedan also kicked off their 2026 campaigns with strong year-on-year growth. The Proton X50 sold 2,429 units in January, an increase of 69.3% over the previous year while, the Proton X70, the company’s newest offering, achieved 672 units, an improvement of 16.5% from 2025.

Meanwhile, the Proton S70 continues to attract strong buyer interest and had its best month since May 2025. 1,604 units sold in January is a healthy improvement of 40.3% and highlights how sedan lovers who love a sporty driving experience are drawn to the model. Finally, the range topping Proton X90 also had a sales bump with 252 units sold representing a 24.1% improvement.

“PROTON has had an excellent start to 2026 and our efforts to refresh the lineup with new ICE and EV offerings while communicating about the technologies in every model is starting to pay dividends. There is a lot more to come as we seek to make further inroads into the market and expand our local production activities to ensure our customers get the best possible vehicles at an attractive price,” added Abdul Rashid Musa.
