Subang Jaya, 2 January 2026 – National carmaker PROTON concluded 2025 by outperforming a cooling automotive market. With 14,655 units sold in December, total group sales for 2025 closed at 157,976 units for 2025. Driving sales growth this year were a series of high-impact milestones across PROTON’s model lineup, international expansion, and strategic national initiatives:

1. Market-Leading Model Performance

PROTON’s lineup dominated multiple segments, led by record-breaking results from its most iconic and newest models:

  • Proton Saga: Reached its highest sales since 2011 with 74,013 units YTD. Notably, October saw 8,373 registrations, the highest monthly volume since the strategic partnership with Geely began, while December sales grew 15.1% (7,975 units) year-on-year.
  • Proton X50: Cemented its legacy as the No. 1 B-segment SUV for five consecutive years. It recorded 28,057 units sold for the whole year 2025, representing an 18.6% YTD growth compared to 2024. This was bolstered by an August peak of 4,287 units (the best in 35 months).
  • Proton X70: Recorded 112,386 cumulative registrations since its inception, maintaining its status as the most successful C-segment SUV in the segment’s history since 2018.
  • Proton S70: Held the No. 1 spot in the C-Sedan (under RM100k) segment for 15 consecutive months.
  • Proton X90: Remained the No. 1 D-segment SUV segment leader for 10 months in 2025 and has held the 2025 top spot since its launch three years ago.
  • Proton e.MAS 7: Secured its position as the No. 1 EV in Malaysia for 2025, holding the top spot for five consecutive months (June – October).

2. Network Expansion & EV Readiness

To support its growing customer base, PROTON expanded its network to 187 Proton Edar outlets, including 27 new 3S/4S centers and Sales City Centres.

Parallel to this, the Proton e.MAS network has rapidly become the largest dedicated EV chain in the country.

PROTON now boasts 48 e.MAS dealerships across the nation, of which 36 are 3S centres, 12 are 1S centres, and 10 are dedicated Body & Paint facilities. Beyond vehicle sales, the company is actively expanding the national charging infrastructure, with 44 e.MAS dealerships currently fitted with DC fast-charging stations to provide a seamless ownership experience for EV adopters.

3. Record-Breaking Export Performance

Through Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB), export volumes achieved a major breakthrough, recording 6,000 registrations YTD—the highest volume since 2012 and a 26% growth over 2024.

  • The Singapore Return: In September 2025, PROTON officially entered its third overseas market with the launch of its first EV, the Proton e.MAS 7, in Singapore. The event marked the historic return of the Proton brand to the republic, approximately 11 years after its exit in 2014. For the year 2025, a total of 224 units has been exported to Singapore.
  • Key Markets: Egypt emerged as the largest market with 2,280 units, while a historic 1,316 units were exported to Vietnam for the Geely brand.
  • Monthly High: December saw 986 units exported, the highest monthly volume in 2025.
  • Top Models: The Saga, X50, and e.MAS 7 led the export charge, with the X50 achieving its highest-ever annual export volume of 1,747 units. Additionally, the Proton Saga saw 3,109 units exported globally, its highest number since 2012.

4. A Revolution in Manufacturing: Malaysia’s First Dedicated EV Plant

On 4 September 2025, Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched Malaysia’s first assembly plant exclusive for electric vehicle (EV) production in Tanjong Malim. Built on a 5.57-acre site within the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV), the facility commenced operations with a RM47 million first phase, providing an initial capacity of 20,000 units that is scalable to a maximum of 45,000 units per annum. Under PROTON’s strategic CKD roadmap, the Proton e.MAS 7 will be the first completely knocked down model to roll off the line, followed by the e.MAS 5, while the facility is also designed to accommodate other premium Geely Group brands such as Zeekr.

5. A New Era in Tanjong Malim

In a historic operational shift, PROTON officially ended 40 years of production in Shah Alam on 30 September 2025. 1,400 employees successfully transitioned to the high-tech Tanjong Malim facility within the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV), which now houses Malaysia’s first dedicated EV assembly line

7. Cultivating Future Talent: Proton Young Talents (PYT)

PROTON continues to build a high-performance talent pipeline through its Proton Young Talent (PYT) programme, which has nurtured approximately 400 youths to date. The programme empowers young Malaysians with global R&D exposure in China and key leadership roles in PROTON.

8. Innovation & Technology: PROTON Tech Week

The Proton Technology Showcase 2025 previewed the future of the brand, featuring the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV—a plug-in hybrid with a total range exceeding 1,400 km—and live demonstrations of Global Modular Architecture (GMA) and AI-enabled connectivity.

9. Strengthening the Local Ecosystem

PROTON’s success in 2025 directly benefited the local supply chain, with the company spending RM3.2 billion on auto parts from Malaysian suppliers. This commitment ensures a resilient domestic ecosystem as vendors transition toward EV component manufacturing.

10. National Automotive Test Centre (NATC)

At Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2025, PROTON and MARii signed a 5-year strategic collaboration to establish the National Automotive Test Centre (NATC). PROTON will designate its famed Shah Alam banked oval track as a shared testing facility for the industry, while also co-funding the development of 200 R&D talents specializing in New Energy Vehicles (NEVs).

11. PROTON Xchange: Promoting Sustainable Mobility

Officiated by Minister of Transport YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, the PROTON Xchange Programme is a RM4.8 million pilot initiative to remove unroadworthy vehicles aged 15 years and older. In collaboration with Car Medic Sdn Bhd, the program offers RM2,000 overtrade support and a first-year road tax exemption for participants upgrading to a new Proton.

Reflecting on these collective successes and the strategic transformation that powered them, Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of PROTON believes the company is now better positioned than ever to lead the nation's automotive future.

"2025 has been a monumental year for PROTON. We have not only achieved our best sales performance since 2017 but have also laid the foundation for the next decade. By consolidating our manufacturing in Tanjong Malim and leading the EV charge with the e.MAS brand, we are ensuring PROTON remains the heartbeat of Malaysia’s automotive industry," said Dr. Li Chunrong.
