SUBANG JAYA, 18 MARCH 2026 – Since its debut on 27 October 2020, the Proton X50 has become one of the most important models in PROTON’s history. More than a successful product, it represents a turning point for the company, changing how Malaysians perceive Proton while pushing the brand’s growth in the SUV market.
In the five years since its launch, the model has achieved remarkable success. With more than 161,000 units sold across Malaysia and export markets, it stands today as PROTON’s most successful SUV and as a result, the Proton X50 has been recognised as the best-selling B-segment SUV model for five consecutive years.
Since the model’s introduction, the 2025 Proton X50 has sold more than 20,000 units, proving demand for the new model is strong and matches the popularity of its predecessor. This momentum has continued into 2026 with 4,271 units delivered in the first two months, reinforcing its status as one of the most popular SUVs in Malaysia.
With an increasing number of options in the B-segment SUV market, consumers have become increasingly demanding. Many buyers now expect features previously associated with higher vehicle segments, including advanced connectivity systems, powerful turbocharged engines and intelligent safety technologies. The Proton X50 addresses these expectations by offering strong performance, a comprehensive suite of modern infotainment features and an engaging driving experience at an accessible price point.
In a segment that has become increasingly competitive, sustained demand over this period reflects consistency that goes beyond initial product appeal. Customer data shows a similar trend tied to high levels of satisfaction. When interviewed, owners have returned a rating of 89% for usage satisfaction, indicating a positive opinion to multiple factors such as performance, design, comfort and technology. In fact, over 70% of buyers cite design and performance as their main purchase decision factors.
Further analysis shows 68% of buyers are aged between 25–35, reinforcing the X50’s strong appeal among young professionals who are either single or married with young children. Importantly, a large proportion of these buyers are new to the Proton brand, indicating growing confidence from customers who previously owned vehicles from other manufacturers.
“The Proton X50 represents the evolution of PROTON into a modern technology-driven automotive brand. It offers Malaysian customers a combination of performance, connectivity and safety that was previously difficult to find in this segment, which is why it continues to resonate strongly with buyers,” said Dato’ Ir Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.
From the moment it was introduced, the Proton X50 was tasked to showcase the next phase of PROTON’s technological evolution. It quickly became known as a pioneer within the company’s lineup, introducing a range of new technologies that would be shared with other models.
For example, when launched in 2020, the Proton X50 was the first PROTON model to feature a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering strong performance and efficiency that appealed to urban SUV buyers. It also debuted the ATLAS infotainment ecosystem, that would form the backbone of PROTON’s connected-car platform in its other models. These innovations helped position the Proton X50 as one of the most technologically advanced vehicles in its class, particularly at its price point.
The pioneering spirit continued with the introduction of the 2025 Proton X50 in July 2025, bringing a comprehensive update to both its design and technology. The refreshed model adopted a more aggressive exterior appearance, giving the SUV a sportier and more confident road presence. Inside, the cabin was significantly reworked, creating a distinct PROTON identity that differed from its Geely counterpart, reflecting PROTON’s growing confidence in tailoring vehicles specifically for Malaysian customers and regional markets.
The model also featured the first application for PROTON’s 1.5-litre i-GT 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. Producing 181PS and 290Nm of torque, the upgrade provided stronger acceleration and delivered a more engaging driving experience with improved fuel consumption to boost everyday practicality.
Engines aside, the new Proton X50 also became the first PROTON model to feature Bahasa Melayu voice recognition, reflecting the brand’s commitment to localising technology for Malaysian drivers. The long-awaited debut of wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay was also made with this model, ensuring it remained highly competitive in a segment where buyers prioritise digital connectivity and intuitive in-car technology.
Beyond its domestic success, the Proton X50 has also contributed significantly to PROTON’s export ambitions. Since its launch, more than 5,000 units have been exported, making it the second most popular export vehicle in recent years. With continuous improvements, strong domestic demand and growing export potential, the model is expected to remain a key driver of PROTON’s growth strategy in the years ahead.
“The success of the Proton X50 has helped strengthen PROTON’s brand perception both in Malaysia and internationally. It has attracted a younger generation of buyers while demonstrating that vehicles assembled in Malaysia can compete with the best in terms of technology, design and driving experience. Ultimately, its impact extends beyond sales figures, reflecting the level of trust customers have placed in the brand over time,” added Abdul Rashid Musa.
